I started feeling overwhelmed since this place was packed with tourists. We took a few quick shots then headed back down to meet the group at the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, which we’ll post about soon! Much of the ruins were hard for us to distinguish, especially all the Treasuries. Just a few more photos (couldn’t resist): It took another 15 minutes of quick hiking to get there and if we had to do it over again, probably would have spent more time taking photos elsewhere. We were running out of time, but decided to haul it to make it there before we had to meet the group again. The map also points to a stadium even further up on the mountain. There’s a lot of rich history behind this city that you can find with a quick google search. The city sits on the side of a mountain and has a truly spectacular view. It was where heaven and earth met and the center of worship for the God Apollo. In ancient times, Delphi was considered the center of the known world. The drive takes 2-3 hours, and since we were in a full bus, we made a stop on the way for a bathroom break and on the way back for a late lunch included in the tour. Considered one of the most important offerings of the Athenians.To break up our time in Athens, we went to Delphi Greece, one of the most popular day trips from Athens.Īfter meeting the bus and stopping by a few hotels to pick up other tourists, we made the journey to Delphi. Treasury of Athenians – Built in the 6th century BC. Believed to be older than the Temple of Apollo. During ancient times, it was thought this spring had cleansing powers and would cleanse the souls of those who came to visit. This would be the site of the Pythian games, Panhellenic Games, and more.Ĭastalian Spring – Located close to the Oracle of Delphi. A couple of the popular exhibits include the Sphinx and Charioteer.Īncient Stadium – On a hill above the Temple of Apollo and Ancient Theatre. Here you find coins, marble statues, golden jewelry, and more displayed. Features stone seats and a rounded theatre, you can truly get a sense of the past here.Īrchaeological Museum – Located next to the ancient site. ![]() The sanctuary features several altars, temples, and two treasuries.Īncient Theatre – Located next to the Temple of Apollo. Can be found southeast of the Temple of Apollo. Sanctuary of Athena Pronea – Located at the ancient site. Inside the temple was the oracle where the high priestess would give her prophecies. The temple is dedicated to Apollo the god of light and music. Temple of Apollo – Located at the ancient site. The mansion was first a private house and then served as a potters’ workshop. Large storage jars that held provisions, pottery vessels, and luxury items were also found. The would uncover four levels and private baths. Excavations would also reveal a southeastern mansion that dates back to the 5th century. This would reveal the major buildings and structures of the sanctuary of Apollo and Athena Pronoia and thousands of objects, sculptures, and inscriptions. In 1893, the French Archaeological School began removing soil from landslides. Often the sketches would depict the spirit of romance. They would create books from their diaries, sketches of Delphi and the coins they came across. Travelers would visit Delphi through the 19th century. From the 16th on, West Europe developed a passion for Delphi. In addition to the landscape being used in works of art, Pythia (a high priestess at the Temple of Apollo who was an oracle) was used as a subject on tarot cards. Many Greek poets have also showcased Delphi in their works including: The Delphic Hymn by Kostis Palamas, Delphic Festival by Kostas Karyotakis, and Return From Delphi by Nikephoros Vrettakos. ![]() ![]() Delphi was also used in Rob MacGregor’s Indiana Jones and the Peril at Delphi. The marble monument was found at the archaeological site of Delphi.ĭelphi has inspired much in the way of literature. This was represented by the stone monument known as the Omphalos of Delphi. Greeks considered Delphi the navel (center) of the world. Pythia was an oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. Delphi, which was formerly known as Pytho, is known for being the ancient sanctuary that become rich as the seat of Pythia. ![]()
